From petitions to thousands of comments all over social media and beauty blogs, a MAC Cosmetic collaboration with Selena Quintanilla-Pérez has been one of the most highly requested collections by beauty followers everywhere! I’m even listening to her albums as I write this review! I first heard there was going to be a MAC X Selena collection last year while browsing fellow beauty blogger, Trendmood1, on Instagram. Since then, I have been waiting patiently for it to launch. When I saw the swatches, I instantly gravitated toward the lipsticks because of the gorgeous colors and pigmentation! I was able to but items early because of the MAC Select program. The collection has since sold out everywhere with potential buyers still waiting to here if there will be a restock anytime soon. I wanted to share my thoughts though about the collection and the items I bought.
I love a good red lipstick and no matter how many I have, they all seem to be a bit different every time. There was no exception here with the Selena collection. The three lipsticks in the collection are:
Como La Flor: It is a cherry red with cool, blue undertones with an Amplified finish. It has a hint of ruby red micro-shimmer, but it doesn’t look like a Dorthy’s shoes from Oz. In my opinion, I think the shimmer only enhances the color giving it a must have red lipstick, especially for the upcoming Holdiay Season!
Amor Prohibido: It is a pinkish mid-tone brown color with a Glaze finish. It was more plum than pink with warm undertones and the coverage was buildable, but not super opaque. I didn’t think I would like this color but it surprised me as being the perfect “my lip color but better” color for me. It is a great color to wear with a dramatic eye look!
Dreaming of You: It is a deep burgundy wine color with a Matte finish. I love this color and think it is the best color for fall! I love a good matte lip but this particular formula had more of a satin feel than matte and didn’t leave my lips dry. This color was my favorite out of the three of them. I can see myself using this color a lot and pairing it with a simple neutral eye look.
I wasn’t a huge fan of the eyeshadow color choices. I felt they could’ve done maybe a quad or had more than just a typical black eyeshadow and a few non-everyday colors. I am not a huge fan of pink eyeshadows, so I just picked two from the eyeshadow collection. Here are my choices:
No Me Queda Mas: It is a medium brown with yellow undertones and a Matte finish. I know what you’re thinking, Nicky it’s just a typical everyday brown. This is true but, for a person who loves warm tones and neutrals, you can never have too many browns. This is a great transition color and I’ll know I will get a ton of use out of this.
Selena: It is a semi-bright, medium purple with warm pink undertones with a Veluxe Pearl finish. I am not going to lie to you, I bought this just because the color was called Selena. Purple is a hard color to create in an eyeshadow and MAC has had very little hits a lot of misses with purple. Not sure what MAC did differently, but this purple is gorgeous! It is a little stiff in the pan, but it has such great pigmentation and I cannot wait to create a purple smokey eye with it!
Bidi Bidi Bom Bom: It is a bubblegum pink with a lot of silver sparkle lipglass. MAC Lipglass is different than normal lipgloss. The reason it is called lipglass is, it is a very shiny gloss that is supposed to make your lips smooth and appear glass like. The formula is thicker and tackier than normal gloss. I’m not a huge fan of lipglosses and lipglasses because I like my lipcolor to last more than a few hours. That being said, I would probably use this on top of a matte lip to give it an extra pop. Another perfect addition to any holiday look this year to give you that extra sparkle!
There you have it! All in all MAC X Selena was a good collection. I feel it could’ve been better though. Other than the lipsticks, I don’t feel the collection was as “Wow” as people were expecting. I adored the packaging, I am really glad they went with a color to stand out with instead of the typical MAC packaging. Were you able to pick up anything from the collection? If so, what were your favorites and not so favorites?
